Summary:

Set of conclusions adopted by the Council of the European Union on 20 July 2023, focusing on the priorities of the European Union (EU) at the United Nations (UN) during the 78th session of the UN General Assembly, running from September 2023 until September 2024.

Further information:

The conclusions restate that multilateralism is a fundamental principle of the EU. Amidst a proliferation of crises, the EU argues that challenges cannot be addressed by any one country alone. It vows to uphold the rules-based international order founded by the UN Charter and to strive for a well-functioning, reform multilateral system, with an effective and sustainably funded United Nations at its core.

The overarching priorities of EU action at the UN for the period between September 2023 and September 2024 are as follows:

  • Accelerating implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs);
  • Strengthening global governance in line with UN Secretary General's proposals for reform and modernisation;
  • Building global partnerships to help achieve common goals.
