Music companies and film producers suffered a partial setback in their fight against internet piracy in January 2008 when the European Court of Justice ruled individuals’ rights to privacy could be allowed to override the rights of copyright owners seeking to bring civil legal claims. In its judgement the Court said that EC law does not require the Member States, in order to ensure the effective protection of copyright, to lay down an obligation to disclose personal data in the context of civil proceedings
