The trial against two Turkish journalists Can Dündar and Erdem Gül of Cumhuriyet newspaper was due to start on the 25 March 2016. They have been charged for writing a report that claims to show that the Turkish secret service supplied weapons to Syria. The Turkish press for the most part supported the journalists.

[In February 2016 Turkey's Constitutional Court had ruled that the rights of the leading journalists detained since November 2015 have been violated, and set them free. Subsequently, Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had said that would neither respect nor obey the decision by the constitutional court]
