Results of the 1st Round of the Presidential Election in the Republic of Cyprus, 17 February 2013. The election would go to a second round on 24 February 2013 after frontrunner Nicos Anastasiades fell short of the 50% needed for an outright majority. The FT reported the news as cash trapped Cyprus taking a big step towards an international bailout as the island’s voters gave the centre-right opposition leader a commanding lead in the first round. Nicos Anastasiades won 45.4%, just short of an outright first-round victory, but raising hopes his pro-bailout Democratic Rally party would have a strong mandate to impose austerity, push through privatisation, and negotiate a deal with international lenders to rescue the island from looming bankruptcy. |
