Greek and Turkish Cypriot leaders agreed 1 July 2008 to start direct talks on a peace settlement, reviving hopes of ending the island's 34-year division.

In addition, Australia's former Foreign Minister, Alexander Downer, is stepping down from domestic politics to accept a role as UN special envoy to the Cyprus peace process.
