Russian President Dmitry Medvedev ordered an investigation on the 24 November 2009 into the death in prison of Sergei Magnitsky, a lawyer who was awaiting trial on charges of tax evasion. Mr Magnitsky acted for for William Browder, the fund manager of Hermitage Capital Management who is barred from Russia. Hermitage has been accused of tax fraud by the Russian authorities and has itself charged interior ministry officials with using Hermitage-linked companies to steal $230m in tax. |
