This Library Note considers reaction to recent developments in the EU, ahead of the debate in the UK House of Lords on 16 February 2012. The first section concentrates on the agreement by 25 of the 27 EU member states of a new fiscal compact on 9 December 2011, and the agreement of the text putting it into practice on 30 January 2012.
