On 10 September 2018 the European Commission presented a proposal for a Decision mobilising the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF) to provide financial assistance to Portugal. The European Parliament and the Council of the European Union adopted the Decision on 23 October.
In April 2018 Portugal submitted application EGF/2018/002 PT/Norte-Centro-Lisboa wearing apparel, requesting a financial contribution from the EGF following redundancies in the clothing sector in the regions of Norte, Centro and Lisboa.
Following its assessment of this application, the Commission concluded that the conditions for awarding a financial contribution from the EGF were met. The Commission therefore proposed to mobilise the EGF for the amount of €4,655,883.
