The European Union is often referred to as a peace project, with the EU being awarded the Nobel peace prize in 2012 for its contribution to the advancement of peace and reconciliation in Europe. Chris Bickerton contests this narrative, justifying his claim by referring to the EU’s inability to keep peace both inside and outside its borders, and to the common currency’s negative impact on relations between EU members. He writes that a possible solution to the divisions created by the euro would be to build a political union with fiscal powers, but notes that at present there is very little political will to accomplish this.
