Diane James becomes UKIP leader | Nigel Farage steps back in at UKIP as Diane James quit

Diane James was elected in September 2016 as the UK Independence Party's new leader. Ms James had been regarded as the favourite to succeed Nigel Farage, who quit as leader following the UK's decision to leave the European Union.

The new leader insisted that the UK's prime minister should actively start getting the country out of the EU.

On 4 October 2016, Ms James announced she was resigning from UKIP's leadership due to lack of internal support.

In a further development one of the newly announced UKIP leadership candidates Steven Woolfe, MEP, was taken to hospital in Strasbourg on the 6 October 2016 after a reported fight at a meeting of the party's MEPs.
