Summary: Directive of the European Parliament and of the Council of 20 June 2019 aimed at encouraging more transparent and predictable working conditions across the European Union (EU). Further information: This Directive complements and modernises existing obligations to inform each worker of his or her working conditions. In addition, it creates new minimum standards to ensure that all workers, including those on atypical contracts, benefit from more predictability and clarity as regards their working conditions. The Directive updates and replaces the Written Statement Directive (91/533/EEC), as part of the follow-up to the European Pillar of Social Rights. Two rounds of consultations were held in the lead-up to the release of the proposal. The European Commission adopted the proposal on 21 December 2017. The Council of the European Union adopted a general approach on 21 June 2018 and the European Parliament's plenary session approved a negotiating mandate on 15 November. An informal agreement between the co-legislators on a compromise text was reached on 7 February 2019. The Parliament formally endorsed this agreement on 16 April, followed by the Council on 13 June. |
