Directive (EU) 2021/555 - adopted by the co-legislators on 24 March 2021 - concerning the control of the acquisition and possession of weapons.
The purpose of this Act is the codification of Council Directive 91/477/EEC on control of the acquisition and possession of weapons. Codification is deemed necessary when rules have been frequently amended, with an aim to retain law clarity and transparency. This Directive supersedes the various acts incorporated in it - the codification proposal fully preserved the content of the acts being codified and did no more than bring them together with only such formal amendments as are required by the codification itself.
The proposal was tabled by the European Commission on 19 February 2020. The co-legislators agreed that an accelerated procedure could be used for the fast-track adoption of codification instruments. The Act was signed by the co-legislators on 24 March 2021 and published in the Official Journal on 6 April 2021.
