Directive prompts alert over electricity shortages

Power generating companies have warned that the implementation of the EU Directive on airborne emissions from large combustion plants could lead to electricity shortages. The Directive particularly affects coal-fired power stations, which make up about a third of the UK's electricity production. Member States are required by the Directive to achieve significant emission reductions by 1 January 2008 at the latest.
