Summary:The European Commission published on 30 September 2024 the results of a Special Eurobarometer measuring the awareness of EU citizens about the disaster risks that could affect them, their preparedness to face various disaster risk scenarios, and the reliance they place on a range of actors in disaster situations. The survey also explores the engagement of EU citizens in voluntary work to increase disaster resilience. Further information:The survey shows that a majority of citizens across the European Union (EU) believe they need more information to prepare for disasters and emergencies. Furthermore, the responses reveal citizens feel mostly exposed to risks linked to the impact of climate change but also security and social risks. People in 17 Member States feel most exposed to extreme weather events, such as storms, droughts, and heatwaves. In some other countries the responses were notably different, featuring concerns around cybersecurity threats, geopolitical tensions, critical infrastructure and human health emergencies. The survey also shows that almost four in ten people do not have the time or financial resources to prepare for disasters or emergencies. |
