Summary:

In 2015, one million refugees arrived in Germany. They came mainly from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan as well as from various African countries. The Germans received them with great commitment - thousands of people welcoming and helping the newcomers. But Germany also showed a different face: attacks on refugee shelters, demonstrations against refugees and a liberal immigration policy, agitation in the social media. What do these developments mean for social interaction? Is society in danger of breaking up? Or is an increasingly open and pluralistic society emerging here? The contributions in this volume shed light on past events and provide a look into the future.
