Abstract:

This book is part of the Global Market Briefing series which provide a country-by-country information resource for international managers, analysts, entrepreneurs and consultants engaged in international business and market development. The GDP growth of Ukraine in 2003 stood at an unprecedented 9.4 per cent, the fastest in Europe, and looked set to close 2004 higher than 12 per cent. However foreign investors remain wary of the country’s legal and financial systems and foreign investment levels until recently remained the lowest in Eastern Europe.

The book is organised in five parts plus appendices. Part one provides the background to Ukraine’s business environment, with chapters exploring such issues as economic and political overviews, foreign investment climate, banking and finance, privatisation, corporate governance and small enterprises. Part two presents a sectoral analysis of the country’s economy, offering a close examination of the traditional mainstay industries such as metallurgy, textiles and wood processing, as well as some more dynamic sectors developed during the last decade such as mobile telecommunications, IT, and computer software. Close scrutiny is made of the legal regimes regulating Ukraine’s energy sector, including oil, gas and electricity.

Part three deals with the taxation system, the legal environment, company registration and incorporation, banking and securities market law. Part four continues with business issues, discussing the legal aspects of property transactions, intellectual property, dispute resolution and the labour code. Specific interest issues such as import and export procedures are also addressed. Part five explores the regional investment climate with particular attention given to seven regions rarely featured in previous publications of this type. The work closes with discussion on Ukraine's major domestic business conglomerates.
