Features published before that date are still available via an archive website (see related url hyperlinks).In a move that triggered widespread consternation in Ukraine, across Europe and even in Russia Donetsk rebel leader Alexander Zakharchenko proclaimed 18 July 2017 the new state of the Federation of Malorossiya, or 'Little Russia'.

Allied rebels in Luhansk distanced themselves from the initiative while Moscow registered surprise.

How did the European press view Zakharchenko's move?

In a related feature in Carnegie Europe's Strategic Europe (see related hyperlinks below) Gwendolyn Sasse wrote that 'the significance of the recent declaration is to highlight the lack of unity and control in the occupied territories. It is thus a stark reminder of the pressing need to rethink the Normandy and Minsk processes in cooperation with the United States'.
