Date: 16/11/1995 The new ban by the European Parliament's College of Quaestors got off to a difficult start. As soon as the Quaestors' chairman Richard Balfe put round a note prohibiting mobile phones from meetings and from the plenary “in order to safeguard the dignity of Parliament's proceedings”, European Voice put a reporter on the case. The first call to a reliable source established the true scale of the problem. “I'm in a meeting” hissed a Socialist official after answering his mobile phone. “I can't talk now - wait until I step outside.” |
