The Dutch government collapsed on the 20 February 2010, prompting an election, after the ruling coalition failed to reconcile deep divisions within the cabinet that had emerged over extending military operations in Afghanistan.

The US and British governments had piled diplomatic pressure onto The Hague to renew its commitment to Uruzgan, albeit under a mission described more in terms of training the Afghan military than active combat.

The decision is also likely to resonate in other European Union countries where the Afghan mission is unpopular and where political parties might argue that their own governments should follow the Dutch example.
