First published in 1992, this is the fourth edition of this outstanding reference survey of the twenty-seven countries of the region. It is part of Europa Publications' comprehensive Regional Surveys of the World series.

The book is divided into three parts. Part one features a series of background essays written by leading experts covering key issues including political perspectives, economies, environment, religion and the rouble crisis of 1998. Part two deals with the countries individually, providing extensive information on their geography, history and economy plus a directory of key political, financial, industrial, cultural and social organisations. There is also a statistical survey that covers area and population, agriculture, industry, finance, external trade, transport, tourism and communications. At the end of each country section is a bibliography to aid further research. Part three concentrates on the personalities of the region, including a Who's Who of political leaders.

This title won the 1998 EIA Award for European Information Sources in the 'Non-official Documentation' category.
