Abstract:

This reference work is one of two successor volumes to Europa's award-winning 'Eastern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States'. The work is split into four parts. Part one consists of nine articles by specialist writers who discuss subjects including organised crime, the Chechnya conflict, international relations, the environment, religion and energy.

Part two, 'Regional information', gives details of membership, structure and activities of the principal organisations operating in the region. It further covers research institutes and periodicals and books specialising in issues of the region.

The largest part of the work is dedicated to country surveys and these include: physical and social geography; an historical chronology; essays on political and economic affairs; a detailed statistical survey; a directory of names, addresses, email and internet and further background on the Constitution, government, diplomatic representation, the judicial system, religion, the press, publishers, broadcasting and communications, finance, trade and industry, tourism, culture, the environment and defence. Included is a select bibliography.

Finally, a section on Political profiles of the region looks at the leading figures and highlights their lives, achievements and current positions.

Countries covered in this edition are: Armenia; Azerbaijan; Belarus; Georgia; Kazakhstan; Kyrgyzstan; Moldova; The Russian Federation; Tajikistan; Turkmenistan; Ukraine; Uzbekistan.

This well-researched reference work will be invaluable to universities, the media, international organisations, trade associations, embassies, government departments, libraries and businesses.
