Book abstract:

The growth rate of e-commerce has been phenomenal and the legislation governing e-commerce has necessarily followed, which might explain why Susan Singleton feels it necessary to publish a revised edition of her earlier work in less than two years. The work is essentially a practical guide, and the author concentrates on that aspect rather than follow labyrinthine paths of legal arguments. It covers the law up to 1 April 2002 but as stated the law in this area has a limited 'shelf-life' and readers are advised to seek their own legal advice appropriate for their own businesses.

Organised over five parts with a useful bundle of appendices, the work is sprinkled with helpful checklists. Part one addresses employment and employee issues and advises on the setting up of company Internet policies. Issues such as Trade Marks, Copyright and Databases are covered in part two. Major legal areas arising from those uses of the Internet to which laws apply are discussed in part three. Contracting on the Internet is the subject matter of part four, which examines legislation in this area including new laws on electronic signatures and distance selling. The fifth part discusses what happens when things go wrong, disputes, defective goods and negotiations.

The book will be useful to businesses and lawyers engaged in electronic commerce.
