Statistics issued on the 13 August 2009 show that Germany has formally come out of recession. Article reports that
Angela Merkel’s bid for re-election as chancellor could receive a boost from the news that Germany has quickly pulled out of its deepest recession since the second world war.

Although politicians urged voters to treat the data with caution, an economic improvement may allow Ms Merkel to claim in the last weeks of the campaign that her leadership has put Germany on the right track.
