Date: 22/05/03 THE European Investment Bank has financed the world's largest wind farm, situated off the Danish coast. The Luxembourg-based EIB, the EU's in-house lending arm, has agreed a €134 million loan with electricity firm Elsam - the main supplier in western Denmark. The offshore wind farm is located south of Horns Rev in the North Sea, 15-20 kilometres off the Danish west coast of Jutland. It includes 80 wind turbines, each with a capacity of two megawatts, and brings Danish wind power capacity up to 8 of total energy supply in the country. Meanwhile, the EIB signed a long-term €10 million loan deal in Latvia to help boost a raft of small-to-medium scale projects ranging from environmental protection to energy savings. The loan to the Nord/LB Latvija bank will help boost the country's competitiveness and bolster its financial system. Latvia has attracted EIB loans worth €330 million since 1994. Projects benefiting include telecoms, road, rail and port infrastructure. The bank also announced this week a €16.5 million plan to finance two Italian-registered ships for the transportation of ethylene. |
