European electricity prices soared on the 15 March 2011 after Germany made seven reactors idle, or a third of the country’s nuclear capacity, in the wake of Japan’s atomic crisis following the earthquake on the 11 March 2011.

Germany decided to temporarily shut down seven of its nuclear power plants while it reconsidered its nuclear strategy.
