France's President Emmanuel Macron called on 6 November 2018 for the creation of a European army to better defend itself from external threats. The call prompted mixed reactions from other global stakeholders.
Mr Macron made the statement as he visited the sites of the battlefields in the context of the celebrations marking a century since the armistice that brought World War I to an end. The French President highlighted the fragility of peace in Europe considering a series of developments on the world stage.
The US President Donald Trump later slammed the call for a European army, calling it an insulting move and urging European countries to pay more money into NATO. Russian President Vladimir Putin was reportedly positive regarding the proposed creation of such European military force.
