Summary:

Reaching a high level of employment has been a matter of common concern for the Member States since the Treaty of Amsterdam entered into force on 1.5.99. To obtain this objective, the EU has adopted coordinated strategies for employment to complement the activities of the Member States. 'Employment and social affairs - Current status 15 October 1999' provides a snapshot of a situation which is evolving all the time. It informs the European public about the measures proposed or adopted at EU level regarding employment and social policy. Specific chapters on the changing world of work, coordinated strategies for employment and equality between women and men at work are also provided.
