The defence industry is a taboo in Germany. The authors of this commentary argue that the new German government being put together in an extended period following the results of the German federal elections on 24 September 2017 should make it a strategic element of Berlin’s security policy.

Germany wants a stronger European defence. But it avoids addressing a crucial element of it: the industry.
