Date: 29/03/01 A self-declared trade unionist has been appointed as a number two in the European Commission's directorate-general for enterprise. Heinz Zourek, a former economic director of the Confederation of Austrian Trade Unions, takes over from acting deputy director-general Giulio Grata on 1 May. "Companies consist of more than their shareholders," said Zourek when asked about his union background, starting at Vienna's Chamber of Labour. "If you want to promote innovation you have to think of the staff, and stimulate them through their working environment." The 50-year-old's faith in the 'new approach' is in tune with his portfolio, covering innovation, single market and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). "A lighter regulatory environment has to rely on self-regulation, not only for an exclusive industry club, but also for SMEs," he said. Self-defined product standards for smaller firms, or easier access to patents, are likely to get a sympathetic hearing from Zourek, who will report to enterprise director-general Fabio Colasanti.
