Turkey’s new president Recep Tayyip Erdogan made his first official overseas trip since being elected in August 2014. In keeping with tradition, his visit on the 1 September 2014 was to the breakaway northern part of Cyprus where he met the Turkish Cypriot leader Derviş Eroğlu.

Reunification of the divided island remained an important topic for Erdogan, according to his statement. He said he would continue to present the issue on international platforms.
