Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan officially declared on the 1 July 2014 that he would run for president in an August 2014 election. The long-expected announcement was made in front of thousands of his cheering supporters.

During the subsequent campaign in July 2014 Mr Erdogan pledged to push for a new constitution if he was elected president.
