España lidera en Nairobi una iniciativa europea para reforzar la seguridad marítima y evitar cat`strofes como la del ‘Prestige’ [Spain leads a European initiative in Nairobi to increase maritime safety and avoid catastrophes such as the ‘Prestige’]

The Spanish Minister for the Environment, Jaume Matas, who headed a Spanish delegation at a meeting of the Governing Council of the United Nations Environment Programme, which took place in Nairobi on 3-7 February 2003, put forward a proposal, supported by the European Union, to increase maritime safety and phase out single-hulled tankers, in order to avoid disasters such as the sinking of the 'Prestige' off the coast of Galicia in November 2002.
