A meeting at ministerial level between the European Union (EU) and the African Union (AU) was held on 21-22 January 2019.

Foreign ministers from both organisations discussed three main themes:

  • Political aspects regarding peace, security and governance;
  • Economic aspects relating to trade, investment and economic integration;
  • Multilateralism, in support of a rules-based global order.

They adopted a joint statement following the meeting. This was the first annual inter-Summit EU-AU ministerial meeting. It was an opportunity to take stock of the implementation of the outcome of the 5th AU-EU Summit, held in 2017.
