Book abstract:

This book provides an overview of European Commission regulation of genetically modified and novel food products. The book provides one of the first commentaries on the wider legal background to the regulation of biotechnology at community level. In addition it has been published to take into account the revision to the Directive 90/220/EEC on the deliberate release of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) into the environment.

The book has twelve chapters, each with a useful list of key points at the beginning. Chapters in the book include a look at Directive 90/219 on the contained use of genetically modified micro-organisms (GMMs); analysis of the new Directive 2001/18 on the deliberate release of Genetically Modified Organisms; an introduction to, and separate analysis of, regulation 258/97 on novel foods and novel food ingredients; traceability and labelling of GMOs, GM and novel foods; legislation on novel feed and novel seed; liability for traditional or commercial damage caused by GMMs, GMOs, GM and novel foods; international regulations; and principles of European Community food law.

The book is aimed at practitioners, regulatory officers, consultants, in-house lawyers and those involved with legal issues in this field. Brian Sheridan is a Barrister practising in the field of Life Sciences.
