EU directive raises fears of used tyre mountains

The UK Environment Agency warned on 27 June 2002 that the British countryside could soon be affected by illegally-dumped car tyres as well as abandoned fridges and televisions. A European Directive will, from 2003, phase out the disposal of tyres in landfill sites.
