In 1999, for the first time since 1992, the EU recorded a deficit in trade in goods. Exports grew by 3% over 1998, reaching 758 bn euro, and imports rose by 9% to 772 bn euro, with a trade deficit of nearly 14 bn euro. The trade balance has now fallen by over 60 bn euros from its 1997 peak. |
