Summary:

The Presidents of the European Counil and of the G5 Sahel co-chaired a video conference with all the heads of state of the Sahel region on 28 April 2020.

Further information:

The co-chairs stressed the need for effective solidarity of the international community in order to provide an effective and sustainable response to the COVID-19 pandemic in the world, across Africa and in the Sahel region. The President of the European Council highlighted the importance to support countries and communities in limiting the negative socio-economic impact of the crisis.

The leaders went on to adopt a Joint Declaration, which covers four main areas related to the security and development in the region:

  • Fight against terrorism;
  • Strengthening regional security and defense capabilities;
  • Restoring the state presence and basic services in fragile areas of the Sahel countries;
  • Increasing development efforts.
