Date: 06/01/2000 ...over his plans to join Spanish telecoms firm Telefónica. In return, Bangemann has agreed to drop a countersuit claiming a denial of natural justice. Member states had launched legal action in the European Court of Justice for an alleged breach of ethics in an attempt to deprive Bangemann of his Commissioner's pension. Under the deal, Bangemann will not join the Spanish firm until next July and has pledged not to handle EU-related issues until the end of 2001. Meanwhile, former Economics Commissioner Yves-Thibault de Silguy has announced plans to join French utilities group Suez Lyonnaise des Eaux as an advisor to the chairman. |
