EU LEADERS last weekend agreed a ten-year action plan with Japanese premier Junichiro Koizumi to broaden mainly economic ties to include political and security cooperation.

In a joint declaration at the 10th EU-Japan summit, the leaders pledged to "cooperate actively towards the realisation of peace, a viable political solution, an improved humanitarian situation and the reconstruction of Afghanistan.
