EU legislation: Duty-free sales. The Commission has responded to the call by the December European Council to re-examine the impact of the proposed abolition of intra-EU duty-free sales as from 1 July 1999. The Commission has concluded that there will not be a significant negative impact on employment overall - any short-term negative impact will be more than offset by long-term job creation effects. It recommends Member States using the Structural Funds to help with any short-term problems, plus the creation of a specially-tailored EU financial measure to tackle specific and local problems. |
