It was announced on the 8 September 2014 that the European Union supported Ireland's request to be allowed to pay back early the International Monetary Fund's part of its bailout because of the money it would save Dublin.

The eurozone nation returned to markets after its programme ended in December 2013, and the cost of repaying the IMF became higher than borrowing from the European Union, and from markets.
