On the 16 September 2016, a fact sheet was issued by the European Union on its relationship with Syria and the situation in the country. As a member and a regular participant in the International Syria Support Group (ISSG) and also supporter of the efforts of the United Nations in this area, the European Union welcomed the agreement, announced by the United States and Russia on the 10 September 2016, on reinstating the Cessation of Hostilities in Syria.

The European Union’s aim is to bring an end to the conflict and enable the Syrian people to return to their own country. In order to reach this aim, the European Union is providing financial help directly in Syria, but also to its refugees and their host communities in neighbouring Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey, Iraq and Egypt.
