EU-US financial market integration - a work in progress
More than ever before, greater financial market integration between the EU and the US and better regulatory cooperation have evolved into an important issue. The efficiency gains would help strengthen the positions of the US and the EU in an increasingly competitive international financial market environment. Jointly achieving greater financial market integration should therefore be at the top of the political agendas on both sides. Yet, there are a number of political challenges ahead. The June 2008 EU-US Summit meeting as well as the forthcoming meetings of the Transatlantic Economic Council provide ample opportunity for policymakers to underscore their commitment.
