Date: 26/07/01 Rock icon Bono urged European Commission chief Romano Prodi to push for a swifter cancellation of the debts crippling developing countries, when they met during last weekend's G8 summit in Genoa. Flanked by Live Aid hero Bob Geldof, the U2 singer also argued that the h1.36 billion pledged by the G8 leaders to a global health fund for fighting AIDS in Africa was inadequate. "History will look at this moment and highlight how a continent burst into flames while we stood by with watering cans," he said, during the exchange which was videotaped for posterity. "History will deal very harshly with those who do nothing." Prodi's spokesman Jonathan Faull said he found the two rock stars "extremely articulate, knowledgeable and sensible". Asked if Prodi liked Bono's music, Faull quipped: "I haven't seen any U2 CDs lying around his flat, but I'm sure if he heard them he would love them."
