Book with text, photographs and images published commemorating the 50th anniversary of the creation of the European Atomic Energy Community (EURATOM / EAEC). Nuclear energy accounts for around one third of the electricity generated in the European Union, thus contributing to a secure energy supply and the reduction of CO2 emissions. 25 March 2007 marks the 50th anniversary of the signature in Rome of the Treaty establishing the European Atomic Energy Community - the Euratom Treaty - which provides a framework for nuclear activities in the European Union. This booklet summarises the evolution of the activities carried out by Euratom in the fields of research, protection of health, economic aspects, nuclear safeguards and international relations. It traces the road already travelled with a view to better future action. Luxembourg has become the European Commission's principal centre of nuclear competence. Long known as the base for Euratom's security inspectors, it is also home, since 2003, to the services dealing with the safety and security of nuclear activities, radiation protection and the Euratom Supply Agency. Nuclear research and assistance to third countries and the institutes of the Joint Research Centre are based in other European Union Member States.
