Abstract:

Eurojargon is a dictionary of European Union acronyms, abbreviations and terminology, i.e. it is a guide to all those mysterious sets of letters such as COBIP, FOURCOM or CSP, or phrases such as 'Framework Programme', 'Copenhagen Criteria' or 'Stuttgart Declaration', that those needing to follow what is happening in the European Union come across all the time. We need to find out quickly what these letters or phrases mean and, hopefully, find out where we can trace further information.

In these days where most of us are tied near-permanently to a PC and the internet we often undertake a quick search on Google (or European Sources Online, of course) to find information. There is no denying that the 'electronic route' has become the default for many. However, experience has shown that, in certain instances, it is still valuable to have a printed source close at hand for quick answers to queries. Eurojargon admirably fits this requirement. It provides brief definitions of, and information on, 5,200 acronyms, abbreviations and other EU-related terms. Where appropriate, additional information such as contact addresses, website URLs and bibliographic references are also provided.

After much sterling work by its original compiler, Anne Ramsay, this new 7th edition has been compiled by another expert in European information matters, Eric Davies. He is a worthy successor. Eurojargon is a reference book that deserves a place on the shelves of all who have an interest in the European Union.
