Abstract:

This collection of essays forms a tribute to Dr Ludwig Krämer, who retired from the European Commission in 2004 after some thirty years dedicated to environmental issues.

Numbering eleven in all, the contributions are grouped in three parts. The first part, 'Enforcing environmental law', features chapters on access to justice in environmental matters, the Commission's infringement procedure in environmental cases, and protection of the environment through criminal law. Part two, entitled 'Horizontal measures', deals with environmental impact assessment, prevention and control of industrial emissions, and environmental protection by product policy, with focus on dangerous substances. The third part looks at 'Media-specific environmental policies', with chapters on protection of the marine environment, Community water policy, soil protection, developments in European legislation on noise protection, and Community action in the fight against climate change.

The book closes with a bibliography, tables of cases and legislation, and a comprehensive list of Ludwig Krämer's publications.

The work will interest scholars, students engaged in environmental law and those with a general interest in European Commission attitudes to environmental matters.
