This technical paper is divided into two parts. It first presents the developments in survey indicators in the 1st Quarter of 2017. The second part deals with the Special Topic 'Nowcasting the direction of euro-area GDP growth'. The authors argue that correctly predicting the profile of GDP growth (i.e. increase or decrease) can, at times, be even more important from an economic or policy point of view than focusing on predicting the growth rate of GDP, for experience shows that models producing high-quality point forecasts do not necessarily provide particularly reliable information on the growth profile. |
