Book abstract:

The aim of 'European Community Law' is to provide an introduction to the mass of legislation and case law that is the law of the European Union by covering both institutional and substantive elements in a straightforward manner. The second edition provides the reader with additional information on the latest changes to EU law including those introduced with the ratification of the Treaty of Amsterdam and those brought about by the ever increasing number of judgements from the Court of Justice and the Court of First Instance.

The book is divided into fourteen chapters which makes it easier for the reader to navigate themselves through the complexities of EU law. Beginning with a general introduction to the EU, its institutions and its legislative process, the book then provides a detailed account of Community law, its forms and its relation to national law. The final five chapters offer an examination of certain specific areas of Community law namely: the free movement of persons; the free movement of goods; competition law; social policy; and finally a discussion of the effects of EC law in the areas of company law and public procurement.

A useful section at the front of the book provides the reader with an easy to access list of cases before the European and national courts; and European legislation, Regulations and Directives.

The book will be a useful aid for undergraduates of both law and European Union studies, students on professional courses coming to European Union law for the first time, business law students and CPE students.

The author, James Hanlon, is the Principal Lecturer in law at Sheffield Hallam University.
