Book abstract:

The focus of this book is to provide an introduction to the mass of legislation and case law that is the law of the European Union. It is targeted to meet the needs of students and undergraduates reading courses in European law, but should also prove useful to students on professional courses meeting the subject for the first time.

The work does not endeavour to cover every area of European law - which would be an impossible task - but it does attempt to cover the institutional and substantive areas. By placing them in a wider Community context and cross-referring areas where there is overlap the book promotes a greater understanding of how the Community operates. An important ingredient in this approach is an examination of the relationship between EC Law and national law. This third edition includes new material on the Treaty of Nice, changes in voting for both the Council and Parliament and an updated section on the Commission. Also featured are new sections on the Charter of Fundamental Rights, 'purely internal situations' dealing with company law, citizenship and joint dominance.

The work will be useful to students of European law at either undergraduate level or on professional courses, business law students and CPE students.

James Hanlon is Principal Lecturer in Law at Sheffield Hallam University.
